We are a collective who formed to produce new articulations and discussions of contemporary art. Our background is as arts practitioners – curators, organisers, scholars, educators, researchers, writers and artists – and this is reflected in the kind of work we cover, and the approach we take to it. All too often, in our professional lives in the arts, we find that there is precious little information about emerging, cutting-edge and experimental art and artists, and so our publication through the Independent Press website and our magazine aims to redress this. Because we are based in South-East Queensland and we encounter a lively, expansive culture of risk-taking and exploratory practice, this work tends to form the core of what we investigate and provide exposure for.

We are aware that artists need critical texts on their work to build biographies and to develop their presence in the highly competitive international art world, and so make no apologies for our artist-centred focus. Rather, we celebrate our position of relative privilege to foreground the artists and art practices that might otherwise not receive the exposure that contemporary publishing opportunities, such as ours, can provide.

Our ultimate goal is to contribute to the development of a richer critical context about contemporary artistic practice, to thicken the internet archive available to other artists, arts workers, curators, writers, scholars and students, and to help generate further discussion of the vivid world of contemporary art we inhabit.
